UK Flights Hit by Further Delays After Air Traffic Control Glitch
Thousands of travellers are facing continued disruption after a technical problem at the UK's air traffic control provider caused widespread flight cancellations and delays.
The issue affected the National Air Traffic Services (NATS) flight-processing system on Tuesday, disrupting operations at major airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Stansted. Although NATS later said the technical fault had been fixed, airlines have been left dealing with a large backlog of aircraft and passengers.
More than 1,900 flights had been cancelled across two days by Wednesday, according to aviation data provider Cirium, with hundreds more facing delays. British Airways and easyJet were among the airlines affected, while disruption also spread to some flights outside the UK.
NATS chief executive Martin Rolfe apologised for the disruption and said a full investigation would examine what went wrong. The UK government has also called for an investigation, as passengers continue to be advised to check their flight status with airlines before travelling to airports.
